review 1: A great read for people who are interested in The Roots, obviously. But it's also interesting for ?uestlove's take on music history, the music industry, hip-hop, race and class, creativity, performance, memory and narrative.... It's more than a memoir - it's uniquely reflective and engaged and becomes philosophical without leaving the basic "what happened" behind. It's a thinking person's memoir in a way such that the reader is engaged with ideas as lived experience.
review 2: It's not much different than Ahmir's thoughtful posts on Facebook. However, I felt a little bit closer to my former classmate while reading this book. He gets a bit more personal than he does on his Facebook page and he doesn't hold back too much on there. Ahmir's life is actually quite ... morethe open book revealing what can be revealed and keeping private what should remain as such. I enjoyed getting a little bit further into his head, past the hair pick. less
