review 1: The author has an incredible gift with words. I enjoyed the descriptions in the book, especially as the main character, Luchi, revels in experiences like the pouring rain, her first car ride, and her first visit to Bangkok. The author begins and ends with images of two trees, each description beautifully unique on its own and also a metaphor for the plot. When viewed through Luchi's perspective, even seeming villainous characters, soften and attain brightness the same way the rain brought fresh color and life to Luchi's first sight of the city. It's an enjoyable book I won't hesitate to let my daughters read.
review 2: First line:"For the first time in days, I hear voices."Luchi is born in a Thai prison to an American mother who is hiding from her past. Her moth
... moreer dies and Luchi has to go into the world, by herself (that was disturbing to me. A little girl, alone in Thailand??). But the warden's son takes her to Bankock, where Luchi claims her family lives. There are obstacles along the way, which are sometimes conventiently taken care of. People also showed up who helped and hindered Luchi. And sometimes that help was convenient too.The ending felt too quick and, uh, well, convenient. It was a happy ending.BUT this is a good book! Ms. Paquette has a beautiful writing style. I did enjoy it and I know middle grade readers would enjoy it as well.Rated: PGV: NoS: NoL: NoLiked: Book CoverLuchi's growthDisliked:Last confrontationEnding less
