review 1: I remember being awed and fascinated during tours of the mansions in Newport, RI - wondering what kind of people were able to live like that and what legacy did they leave. I happened upon this book - a memoir of an Astor descendent who is probably my age...growing up in one of these legacies while I grew up in a "normal" family and small town. Sad...but helpful. Though I must admit I'm starting to be skeptical of memoirs...understanding that it is only one side of the story.
review 2: A fairly typical rendering of a dysfunctional family, interesting for its family connections. Written for the young adult market. The photos are good. The story is limited, I think, because it's entirely personal, without much development of the family line or lives other than
... more that of the author, which would have added texture to the narrative. Also a limited, linear timeline. The family tree in the frontispiece offered such promise, the final product was a disappointment. less

not a bad book but so depressing. And it felt unfinished, don't think I would recommend it.

a pretty abrupt ending... I would have liked to learn more about her growing up.
