review 1: I picked this up because of the title (I love cheese too), and I stayed because it is a funny book. At first I wanted the rats to be cute, but not only did the illustrations grow on me, they fit the text perfectly. I laughed and laughed, and when I finished my husband picked it up and smiled too. After he read it, I told him my feelings about the illustrations and how I was drawn in by the rats (no pun intended), and my husband smiled and said, "A good illustration of the comparative and the superlative."Cute touch for the author and illustrator to mention their favorite cheeses.
review 2: This book is pitch-perfect.With each new rat that's introduced, the text accumulates adjectives, but the sentence structure is varied enough that it's never flat or boring to
... more read. It would make a great read-aloud, as the text flows nicely and the humor would easily carry through to a group reading. The mixed-media illustrations are also bold enough that a group won't miss the action, even from the back of the storytime mat. And, finally, the ending, while potentially moralizing in the hands of another storyteller (the original rat decides to share the cheese with all the other rats) is actually lightly handled and comic in itself (the last page shows all the rats sitting at an enormously long banquet table with one rat politely asking someone to please pass the pepper).A treat. less

A book that's about a rat getting cheese as much as it is about the way the world works.

Simple, funny, repetitive. Would be fun read-aloud for preschool/K1.
