review 1: Great memoir about WSJ journalist's first encounter with husband in China through their fight against his kidney cancer. It does introduce something of the conundrum of the cost of health care, but less about "would we do that again?" than "yes, we have this health system at our access, of course we would try everything." An indictment of the wide array of costs for the same healthcare procedures comes up at the end depending on how much the hospital/insurance is able to negotiate - but doesn't get explored much. She tackles a lot - but the most touching part is the remarkable way her husband comes to life - it's a wonderful tribute to him and their family.
review 2: In this memoir, Bennett relates the experience of her husband's seven year battle with cancer -
... more- explaining the various treatments he endured and their costs. This had some interesting parts--particularly the parts about their relationship (of which I wish she spent more time on) and also interesting was the seemingly arbitrary costs of health treatments. But a lot of the book, her conversations with doctors and explanations of treatments, etc., were pretty boring and repetitive. A lot of the book seemed like something she wrote to help herself make sense of and heal from the experience. less
