review 1: I have been a clothes horse for most of my life and am crazy for anything related to fashion - no matter what venue. Diana Vreeland was a very interesting character and hit her stride when she joined "Harper's Bazaar" as a fashion editor in 1936. She never stopped and moved on to become editor-in-chief for Vogue until 1971. She reinvented herself after she was fired from Vogue and, at an age when most of us would have long retired, she accepted a position at Special Consultant to the Costume Institute for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was lengendary for her good taste and quirky personality. You either loved or hated her. She had a difficult relationship with her mother who favored her "prettier" younger sister. Diana had a very different look and she heralded ... morethe arrival of women who made the most of their assets and were considered "beautiful" in a very unconventional way (example Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl"). I love her saying that "everybody makes an appearance every day" and she encouraged women to try new things, use their imaginations and re-create themselves. She married a very handsome man and they were the "it" couple of their time - invited everywhere and always beautifully turned out. Their marriage was very successful and she was devastated when he died. She did not feel sorry for herself though and busied herself with her work. I didn't particularly like the style of the writer but I learned a lot about this very interesting icon of the fashion industry.
review 2: This is the story of the iconic fashion editor, Diana Vreeland, from her career at Harper's Bazaar and Vogue to her reign as consultant to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She takes us with her to a social scene including Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Lauren Bacall, Penelope Tree, Lauren Hutton, Andy Warhol, Mick and Bianca Jagger, and the Kennedys. A fascinating expose' of an amazing lady. Interesting and intriguing person. Well written book. less

Obligatory reading for a man of my persuasion. Lots of fluff until the end.
