The Falconer Files
review 1: This is a very comfortable read. It takes place in England in the Cotswolds, in small villages one of the few places that families tend to stay for generations and the homes are usually small cottages. The best feature is that not only do they really know their neighbors, nothing can really be a secret. As you will discover if you try this book. The main characters are Detective Inspector Harry Falconer and his assistant Acting Detective Sergeant Davey Carmichael. There is a very thorough description of each person they meet and a constant tug between the investigating detectives. I found this book to be a relaxing read. I hope you try it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it to.
review 2: My main issue with this was that it was too perfect. Yeah, yeah, I know. First world
... more problems...Like the Saxon tower* of the village church, it's just too good to be true. Everyone is one-dimensionally lovely (except for the victims) and the sun always shines. Sure, you could say that if that's not what I'm into then why am I reading cozy British mysteries? To which I'll reply that the reason I love cosy British mysteries is for the darkness beneath. Caroline Graham does this brilliantly: her characters are all emphatically real people, with flaws and contradictions and flashes of light (Gavin Troy especially, is a work of genius). If you just want to be transported to an anonymous Mayhem Parva in which bobbies worry about sheep worrying and retired brigadiers sip gin-and-it (rather than taking up consultancy posts with BAE systems) this is absolutely the book for you. If you're looking for depth, try elsewhere. *Oh aye? And a neolithic tea urn as well, I'll be bound. less
