review 1: I'm so glad I read this. I often found myself thinking about Mr. Szpuk and his life during random times of the day. Not only is this an incredible story of survival and family love, but it is well-written. I actually have about 10% more to read on my Kindle, but I will be disappointed when I reach the end and have no more of it to read. It always feels so wrong to say that I "enjoyed" a memoir that is full of so many struggles, but I guess a well-written memoir leaves with no alternative but to enjoy it. If you find it in your Kindle book shelf like I did recently, read it. You won't be disappointed. (I ended up getting it from Bookbub.) And I hope Andy Szpuk writes some more.
review 2: I love to see so many other sides of the story. I have read a lo
... moret of Holocaust stories and really have an empathy with the Jewish people and all they suffered at the camps in the Nazi Regime. Though I still have that empathy I am expanding my mind into other territories, other lives and other people. The atrocities the Nazi Regime forced on the Jewish people was horrendous yet now I am seeing more and more sides of this war. WWII did not only affect the Jewish people but people from every walk of life. I have read about what Russia did to the Czechs and what they did to German Civilians in the wake of the war now I read this and read the plight of the Ukrainians. Never in all my imagination could I fathom such ruthlessness, brutality and hate. The things that Stephan saw, did and lived are unimaginable to an adult let alone a developing child. That he was capable of living any sort of decent life in adulthood is just amazing. The "if only's" alone would be enough to drive any sane person mad. That he grew into adulthood and flourished is beyond my comprehension! Thank you for giving us another side of the story! less
