review 1: This beautifully illustrated book will leave every child wide eyed and amazed. This is truly a brilliant book that takes children on a magical journey with Leon, the main character who makes you feel that magical things will happen if you believe. It is about a young boy who visits the circus with his brother and sister, however they are not impressed with the acts and think that it is make believe. Leon, however does believe and is choosen by the magician to be part of the act. He travels to the place between where all sorts of wonderful sights greet him, into a magical world of astonishment that is truly alive with magic. This book is aimed at children in years 3 and 4 , however i feel that children from nursery onwards will enjoy this story. Part of the magic of this bo... moreok are the illustrations and you really have to see a copy to appreciate just how beautiful they are.
review 2: This is a wonderful and imaginative book, with exceptional illustrations. The front cover in itself would be enough to draw children in as it is laced with gold artwork and reveals the magical theme that runs throughout. It follows a young boy named Leon who is fascinated by magic and the circus. He attempts to convince his rather cynical friends that magic is real, and it is revealed to the reader through various pictures, the detailed font and elaborate graphic detail. Leon enters ‘The Place Inbetween’ where all the magic is stored and he finds himself surrounded by everything that is magical, from white rabbits to floating card tricks. The words within the book literally come to life through the illustrations, for example near the beginning, the author describes the atmosphere in the circus, and “The lanterns went out. In the darkness the crowd fidgeted with excitement. There was a cough, a whisper and then a loud hush.” This page is completely black with a few stars that are placed around the tent and really builds up the anticipation of what will happen next. The book also incorporates various page structures, such as a fold out page that reveals what the carousel produces after the handle is turned. The images also use a mixture of real life photography with painted illustrations that almost makes the reader believe they are between this world of reality and magic. I really enjoyed this book, and although it is not very long, I believe the graphics and illustrations more than compensate for this. The ways in which children can interact with it and the visual stimulation it provides makes it the perfect book for story time at the end of the day. I believe it would be perfect for early years, key stage one. less

Would've been better as an animated short.
