review 1: As a expression of personality, this breezy, how-I-did-it reflection on achieving writerly success was unbecoming. Ms Patchett is spunky and wants us to admire her, but that's hard to do when she displays such evident condescension toward some of the ordinary devotees who attend her talks because they admire her or want to learn something of the secrets of novel-writing. She pillories those who strike her as stupid or benighted. This is an ungracious thing to do.Some bits of advice in this book are useful but meant little because Ms Patchett's lack of compassion and moral sensitivity toward ordinary people had already shown through. How then could she inspire me as an exemplary artist? A more abidingly memorable book of this kind is "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft"... more by suspense novelist Stephen King.
review 2: What a charming little book! I confess that I've never read anything else by Ann Patchett (and what's worse am unlikely to), but this one was a gem. If you're any kind of writer - no need to be a novel-writer or even a fiction writer, for that matter - you'll probably appreciate Ms. Patchett's journey and quite possibly benefit from her advice. At the very least, you should laugh and/or groan at least once in the reading. less

This practical memoir is as witty and entertaining as it is helpful. It was a very enjoyable read.

Practical and funny, AP's advice comes from the heart of her experience. A valuable read.
