review 1: Falon Nethercott 12-18-14ELA Green A Lion Called Christian This nonfiction narrative called, A Lion Called Christian, by Anthony Bourke & John Rendall, is a very emotional young adult novel, where two adults are coming from Australia and moving to London. These two men are Anthony Bourke & John Rendall. They are from Australia, and have great experience with animals. John and Ace decided to buy a optimistic and majestic lion cub named Christian. Some more main characters are Christian and George Adamson. George Adamson is a very important part in the book to Christian and his new life in the wild. Some settings in the book are Africa, Sophiscat, and the Church. The church is a special plac... moree to Christian, it is where he would play and get his daily exercise. The Sophiscat is where he lived, and his owners worked. Christian got the basement to himself. He had a lion- sized kitty litter box. He adored living in London with his owners. Christian enjoyed going upstairs and laying next to John and Anthony. At the church he loved chasing his owners and his toys at church, while playing. When Christian was getting too big, they collaborated that they needed to find a good home for Christian to have. They decided to free him into the wild, later on in his life. One major plot event was Christian getting rehabilitated back into the wild. John and Anthony did not want Christian to be like his parent’s, growing up in captivity. This was a very long and expensive decision. Going to Africa was a long journey for a young lion cub. They had to give him plenty of water and tranquilize Christian for the trip to Africa. John and Ace were excited, but heartbroken for losing their best animal friend. This is very sad for them to go through. It was sad because they were upset for letting him go and saying goodbye. But, later on they would see him again. A major conflict for John, Ace, and George is to create a pride and get Christian back into the wild safely. Mostly creating and a pride was the hardest. Boy took a few weeks until Christian was allowed in the pride because of their difference in size and they were both males. After a fight between them, Boy finally let him in the pride. This was a relief for all of them. Now it would be easier to have Christian go back into the wild because he had a pride and they could survive together as one family. One thing I enjoyed about the book was the pictures. I enjoyed seeing Christian growing and to see how he is developing. I also liked seeing pictures of when he was in Africa with George and the other lions. I also enjoyed the process in which Christian was going into the wild. I liked that part because it was very suspenseful, and interesting reading how to get an animal back into the wild. One part I did not enjoy was the ending. I did not like the ending because it did not tell us how he was in the wild and where he ended up in the wild? I would of liked to see how he turned out living in the wild with his own pride or maybe he was dead. I will never know! I would recommend this book to young adults or 7th graders and up. I would recommend the book to those people because it has great vocabulary that 5th graders would not be able to comprehend. I would also do it to those people because it is a very inspirational true story on an amazing human to animal bond. I would also recommend it to someone who likes animals. It would be a good book on a great animal story. It is very uplifting story and almost wants yourself to buy a lion. I would not recommend this book to someone that does not like animals or doesn’t like to read about them. They would probably abandon the book. Some people do not like to read about a touching story about a magnificent animal.
review 2: Very inspirational - someone had sent me the link to the youtube video a few years ago and i had found it moving & touching - shed a few tears and got choked up. This is a quick read and, though not well written, still very informative and interesting to learn the backstory of the famous lion called Christian - I rewatched the youtube reunion video again after reading the book and it still chokes me up. less
