review 1: After 15 years of teaching children with autism, you'd think I'd be tired of reading about it. But I'm not. I find it endlessly fascinating. I particularly like reading books where those afflicted can say what it feels like. But this one was different. Carly presents in so many similar ways to so many kids I've worked with, and yet underneath it all, she had an inner voice all along just dying to get out. Some people say she's not really typing, that the thoughts and ideas aren't hers. But I've been teaching long enough to have seen some pretty remarkable things from kids that no one thought could succeed. Carly herself wrote the last chapter, and her message is pretty clear. Don't give up on people with autism. Keep pushing them. Believe in them. Carly's story... more is remarkable, and I for one, won't give up.
review 2: At the end of the book, Carly gets her own chapter. This is how she starts it: "Wow, I can't believe you made it all the way to my chapter of the book! So tell me the truth. You really didn't end up reading all of my dad's boring writing, did you?"While I think Carly was trying to be funny (her humor is evident throughout the book), I really do agree with her! Her story is interesting, but at many times I found myself thinking the book was boring.If you're interested in autism, and have a few minutes, I highly recommend reading the Epilogue of this book, which includes Carly's chapter and a compilation of conversations with Carly over social media. less
