Chester the Raccoon
review 1: This issue book digs into the subject of bullying and details what it feels like to be bullied. Chester Racoon's mother teaches her young raccoon and his classmates exactly how to deal with "prickly" people. The author, Audrey Penn, remains optimistic throughout the entire book and takes it a step further when she wraps the story together by bringing the cold-hearted bully into a much nicer light. Barbara Gibson's illustrations are of crisp and vibrant beauty that add to the story in an intriguing way. Bullying is quite a normal discussion today, and this book would be a great introduction into such a classroom topic. I like how the bully is welcomed at the end of the story, and I especially think children can relate to such things.
review 2: Chester, Ronny, an
... mored Cassy, along with their classmates, are having a hard time with a bully at school. He is stealing their toys, scaring and picking on them. Chester and Ronny's mom decide to tell them a story that will hopefully help them deal with the bully in a nice way. This book is a great book to read to children just entering elementary school. Bullies are a hard thing to deal with at any age but especially as a child when all you want is to make friends, play, and enjoy school. This book shows children that there are ways to deal with bullies, you don't have to keep letting them get you down. Barbara L. Gibson does an amazing job with the illustrations. One of my favorites is at the very end when Chester sees his mother and sends her a little message. less
