review 1: I can't say that I loved this book, but I can't say that I hated it either, so I must conclude that this was a mediocre read for me. I found the plot extremely predictable and the main character far too bitter and angry to be believable once true love slaps him in the face. The falling in love portion of the book also took place much too fast for me to get caught up in the possibility that it was actually happening. Considering that you need to believe the main character's emotions and reactions in order to go on the journey with him through the book, I'm not certain how I can give the writing even that much credit. I do give points for moments of writing creativity and I can easily see how this will translate onto the big screen. Still, it wasn't something I will rem... moreember for very long or can say touched me in any kind of way. I read it, I finished it, I picked up another book afterwards. No regrets, but no lasting memories either.
review 2: Got this book free on Amazon when they were having a give away. What an amazing surprise. This book was tremendous. Honeymoon W/ Harry was one of the best books I've ever read. Told in the first person, from the point of view of Todd, a warts-and-all character who does everything he can to make you not like him but the voice is so original and distinct and as Todd peels away the layers of himself, never asking for sympathy for who he is laugh-enducing and sort of heartbreaking. The writer has created one of the most distinct characters. This is a man, for better and often worse, who comes off more real in fiction than most men come off in real life. The writer has made a bold choice with Todd, trying not to make his sympathetic, but the fact the character is funny as hell, confused as most men are about his feelings, and so devoted (and when his love for Tami becomes a competition, the most competitive guy imaginable) you can't help but dig him. He makes you laugh but ultimately breaks your heart and makes you understand so fully what it is to lose someone you love, someone you would do anything for, someone didn't feel you deserve in the first place. And putting up with the woman's father, Harry, is a lot. Harry is a giant pain in the ass but only a character as demanding and mean would be a good foil for Todd. Todd's descriptions of Harry paint such a hilarious picture of Tami's father and Harry never disappoints. He knows Todd isn't worthy of his daughter (probably the character who is slighted most in this book but you still get a pretty good picture of her) and Harry's probably right. But equally you get to understand Harry, a man battling his own demons, his own control issues, who is losing the person he loves most in the world to someone who doesn't feel is worthy. I loved Harry because he is me with my daughters. any man with children will understand him. Any woman with a father, though overbearing, who loves her as much as Harry does as misquided as it is, will know exactly who Harry is. Though I would catagorize this as a book women would love because of the strong emotional impact of the story and the relatabilitty of the characters it is written from such a clear, distinct male point of view, I would say both men and women would easily and fully get caught up in the story. I was surprised how much I did. I read it in two days and that's saying something. I admit, I cried a few times pretty hard. More than I ever do at fiction (nonfiction, knowing a story is real has a different effect on me.) But thankfully, I laughed more than I cried which sets this writer off from Mitch Albom or Nick Sparks. This took me on a journey of emotions which is what I think the author's intent was, for us to travel into a love the narrator has no ability to navigate, to meeting her father who quickly becomes his hilarious and nasty nemesis, through the greatest loss any man could suffer and then on to a honeymoon where personal destruction leads to personal redemption. But entering these emotional waters, he always kept me laughing along the way. That's a gift. I don't think I would have appreciated the book so much without the heavy dose of humor to help temper the strong, emotional story. After thinking about it, the reason I responded to this book so strongly and recommend it so highly is because it dared me to laugh, it dared me to cry, it dared me to care about characters that might not be so mice at first but as you live with them, you can't help but love them in spite of their flaws. And the first person narration helped the characters feel more real and vivid. I highly recommend this book. I wasn't sure I was going to like it but this one reeled me in completely. It's just a damn good book. I know they're supposed to make a movie out of this and you can see why. It would be a hell of a date movie that both men and women could enjoy. But read the book. If the movie is half as strong as the book, I'd be surprised. less

This is an amazing book. The voice in it is so strong and the emotions are so raw. Loved it!

I'll be interested to see this movie when they make it and who they cast as Harry and Todd.
