review 1: There were lots of good things about this book--cannot IMAGINE putting two infants into a car and hitting the road for 3-4 months with no forays back to home base. The interaction between him and his wife, Dinah, really hits the mark maritally speaking. Still, I'm left sometimes thinking that he may just be too willing to think his kids are above the feelings of anyone else on the planet--bribing with chocolates didn't rest easily in my mother-brain. The book also is sold as some kind of laugh fest, so it was a shock to realize that the storyline encompassed his father's illness and death--and this was the portion of the book that was really, really well written and told.
review 2: Forget climbing Mount Everest, swimming the Atlantic or walking the Amazon - ... moretravelling 8000 miles in a car with two children is endurance and bravery in an altogether different league. Ben and his wife should go down in history for completing (and surviving) such an incredible journey. It's an achievement only bettered by one other, and that is Ben's wonderfully written, insightful, honest, emotional and very, very funny account of their trip. I cannot recommend this book enough. less
