review 1: The only positive thing I can say about this book is that I think it is well written. Beth Raymer’s writing style is one I enjoy more than most, it is straight forward and easy to read, vocabulary is neither too simple nor sophisticated, and descriptive passages are exactly how I like for them to be: a minimal use of words that nonetheless perfectly capture and convey an ambiance or a scene. However, the book itself is a total waste, in my opinion. I don’t like the personality of Beth herself. The attempts to portray herself as whimsical and cute seem contrived and fake. I don’t like her, she doesn’t interest me so therefore I am not really interested in what she has to say either. On another level, I just don’t even get what this book is about in general. W... morehat in the world is the purpose of this book? Am I supposed to be fascinated or intrigued or shocked or amused or enlightened by this alternative gambler’s life-style? I don’t see a single purpose to this story, why was it written and published??? Critics’ reviews on the back cover use terms such as hilarious memoir, loveable characters, wild and crazy. These critics must have extremely dull friends and lives as there is not a single funny thing about this book, the people are nowhere near lovable and I don’t think there is anything crazy or fun or outrageous about this story whatsoever, as apparently Beth and these critics think it is. Don’t read it, waste of your time in my opinion, in a world full of so many excellent books.
review 2: I was disappointed in this book. The author had a life different from most of the people in my realm of knowledge, but she didn't do a very good job with telling her story. I felt like an eighth grade English teacher grading a paper that the author had to write in order to pass the class. I enjoy gaming and stories about gaming but this was more about the author's misadventures than anything else. I'm glad this was a library borrow and not a purchase. less
