review 1: Loved the characters--even the evil ones were well written. Although it might not be historically accurate, the events were conceivable. The hero was my kind of highlander--a true hero and the heroine was gutsy and courageous--even if at times a bit negligent of her own safety. The book clips along at a fast pace, but is still detailed enough that you get to know the characters. I can't wait to read the stories of the other brothers. I would recommend this to anyone who loves medieval romance.
review 2: About a 1/3 of the way through and it started out pretty good. I'm not feeling the heroine (Cailin). Her thoughts, feelings, and actions are inconsistent. One minute she is shoving her tongue down the hero (Connor) throat, following him in hopes to get a
... moreway from her tyrant father and a lunatic English soldier hellbent on hanging her, and yet when Connor helps her, she refuses to listen, refuses to help the men that are risking their lives for her, all because of propriety that has already been thrown out the door the minute she decided to leave her father's castle dressed as a boy. If her actions were more consistent, I'd like it better. At least Connor is consistent, as he has said all along that he doesn't want love or a family, he may lust after her and have the initial feelings of love in the actions he does and the words that he says. He's doing what he can to keep her safe and she won't share a room with him for propriety's sake, even when soldiers are at the same inn as they are. I don't mind strong-willed independent women, but ones that don't think just make me cringe. The second 1/2 of the book definitely made up for the first part. Cailin developed nicely and she became a more consistent character, still strong-willed and independent, but she knew when to use that to her advantage, not put everyone in harms way. One thing that I never gor though was the fact that the bad English guy kept threatening her and after Connor is "killed", the story jumps at least 5 days and she's being held in England, so what happened during those 5 days? I just can't imagine that Bad English Guy just throws her back on horse and trapes across Scotland and England for 5 days and....nothing, not after 3 years of anger and chasing her through Scotland for nearly a year. Not that I would want to see the rape of a pregnant woman, but maybe some indication as to why he never followed through on his repeated threats and attemptsOverall, a good story, like I said took a while to get into the heroine, but worth it in the end. less
