review 1: I love Christian biography and this one is a keeper. This summer I have enjoyed this one along with Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother, by Xinran, and have gained a better understanding of Chinese culture in the most pleasant way possible - biography. Here we follow the journey of a young boy and his family during Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward, watch as he continues to college and is a natural leader but finds himself labeled a counter revolutionary during Tienaman Square Massacre. After imprisonment is allowed to finish school but finds himself rejected by all except the one who becomes his wife. During this time of deep despondency the seed of the gospel is planted and bears fruit. From here we watch all the wonderful things that God can do through a surrendered l... moreife. Bob Fu loves China and is still deeply involved in ministering to her people and is the founder of ChinaAid.org.I love how the Word of God reaches into lives and changes them forever! My greatest joy comes from knowing people , in life or through books who not only bow the knee, repent and are saved but go on, full of the a Spirit to walk an exciting life sharing the gospel and seeing other lives rescued and changed.
review 2: This book was an eye opener about religious persecution in China today. By virtue of practicing various types of Christian religions common in the rest of the world, Chinese nationals become enemies of the state, imprisoned, spied upon, and forced to flee the nation via byzantine escape routes of the types described in John LeCarre spy thrillers. i'm not clear about exactly who makes up the persecuted "Christian" population in China. Fu, who managed a harrowing escape from China with his wife, is recognized today a fundamentalist Christian pastor from Texas and founder of the China Aid Association, it's unclear to me if people from other recognized Christian churches - Presbyterians, Lutherans, Episcopalians - suffer the same persecution in China as did he and his associates. What was really an eye opener for me was that after being jailed and spied on for years, when Fu and his wife became succeeded in leaving and becoming refugees neither the United States nor the United Nations refugee organizations would let the immigrate because they did not recognize China as practicing religious persecution. What has been going on in China was not widely recognized by the rest of the world. Before converting to Christianity, Fu was present in Tiananmen square, leaving shortly before the military arrived, which he also paid a price for. After finishing this book I then picked up the book Born Red, written by Gao Yuan who had been a teenager when the Cultural Revolution broke out. These two books have disturbingly-similar themes although the reason for the government persecution is quite different. less
