review 1: Mankoff, long time cartoon editor of The New Yorker, has produced a biography that is mostly cartoons, some prose, and totally funny. Included are many of his own cartoons, and those of the legendary cartoonist of the magazine—Garson Kanin, Sam Gross, and George Booth. How does a cartoon get chosen for The New Yorker? Can an aspiring cartoonist make a living at it? How can you win the magazine’s Cartoon Caption Contest> Mankoff tells all, and hilarity ensues.

... moretest. The book contains more detail about Mankoff's early life, how he broke into cartooning, how others cartoonists broke into cartooning, their process of creation, and how they get ideas. The book also talks about the Cartoon Bank, Mankoff's brainchild that provides alternate income for cartoonists, since the New Yorker is now the only market left for cartoons in print. I found the book fun to read, and charming. The best part of all is that it is chock full of cartoons, both Mankoff's own, and those of others. less

Good. I don't know much about cartoons. The memoir part was good.
