review 1: This book is a very detailed look into the behind scenes of the decision making process of increasing the troop levels and the strategy to use in Afghanistan. It is long and repetitious in the extreme to put it nicely. I honestly found the parts which talked more about the situation in Pakistan far more interesting and to be honest, necessary, because most folks do not have a clue about what is really going on in that country at all.
review 2: A real fly-on-the wall account of Barack Obama's earliest days as president and commander-in-chief. No one in Washington gets the level of access accorded to Bob Woodward, and he uses this to great advantage through a series of intimate interviews, and access to top secret documents, memos and meetings. What we see is t
... morehat the legacy of Vietnam, the dysfunctional relationship between the White House and the uniformed military, is very much alive when it comes to Afghanistan. We also learn a great deal about Barack Obama and his personal approach to war. The president is calm, deeply cerebral, and also utterly ruthless if he has to be. As the young president attempts to craft a credible exit strategy from Afghanistan, he comes up against the powerful military commanders who believe the war must be expanded by at least 40,000 troops if they are to have any hope of succeeding in degrading the Taliban. However the president is adamant that such an expansion is unacceptable. Woodward offers no judgement here, and there are no truly explosive revelations, but this is a very readable and engaging account of the key decisions made on Afghanistan, the toxic relationship the US has with Pakistan, the increasing use of drone strikes, and the ever-looming possibility of another terrorist attack on the United States originating from what the national security team refers to as 'AfPak'.' less
