review 1: I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. Recently, it has been nagging at me how disconnected my life is from nature. So this novel really came at an appropriate time, for it is all about the connection I feel I'm missing. The often harrowing exploits of Boyd Varty and family are exciting and entertaining. I really enjoyed living vicariously through Varty growing up on the game reserve his grandparents created from nothing. When the family is in crisis, Varty must find his way out of despondency and back to embracing the life he loves. His journey is unique and interesting, and although it is one very few of us will ever have in common with him, the life lessons are universal.
review 2: I loved this book. I probably am not the only one who, as a c... morehild, wished for the exact kind of childhood that Boyd Varty had, full of wildlife, nature, and adventure. Unfortunately, most of us have lost touch with this unconscious need to be wild, which leads to so much ridiculous materialism, selfishness, and greed played out over and over in our so-called "modern" cities, towns, and lifestyles. I love how this book reminds me of how much we need these wild places to heal us and make us whole. Even as an adult, I am still jealous of life on a wildlife reserve. less
