review 1: This actually wasn't a bad little book - not really a romance, as I'd say that was more of a secondary plotline rather than the main thread - but the characters were endearing and the dialog was good. The book uses a lot of instant messaging, which I don't have a problem with necessarily, but I felt that in this case it hurt the book more than helped it. It felt a little gimmicky, because often instead of seeing a scene unfold, we'd hear about it secondhand via instant message, which was really anticlimactic. Plus, long instant message sessions can be a bit dull to read (kind of like long strings of dialog with no action).I think I would have forgiven these sections more if they served more of a narrative purpose. For example, if the story was told from a limited POV and th... moree instant message segments were a way of pushing beyond what the character had access to. But as it's written, there really is little point to doing things via instant message instead of just showing us the scenes. Some of the most pivotal scenes happen off camera, which is disappointing. Plus, the book is at its strongest when it's not doing the IM thing. This was a freebie, but I don't think I would have been upset if I had paid for it (unlike the last book I read). I would read other books by this author, especially if they were more traditionally written, or if they fully embraced the unconventional format.
review 2: 3.5 starsIt's a nice quick read (novella, 125 pages) centered around a family-owned corporation where the relatively young son (and heir-apparent) makes a discovery that sets him on a path to arrange for a hostile takeover (the father is the current CEO). I actually liked the secondary characters better than the son (Parker), such as Mason, Luke and Anna. The IM'ing between the various characters was some of the best "dialogue" and rather funny at times. less

A good book, but a bit too short for the plot and character developement to fully form
