review 1: Really good information, and a lot more palatable since it's presented in a graphic format. I wish I had this book in high school/college - there are lots of tips and explanations that I would have found useful. It wasn't as useful at this point in my life since I'm an established adult (finally) and I don't really have trouble with finances/debt. But there were still useful tips about saving money on things like food, clothing, and entertainment. Even though I don't have debt, I could be saving more...and this book was a good reminder about that. I didn't love the characters - Penny is a little bit of a judgmental know-it-all, and Mil is a ditzy consumerist...but they get the point across. I'm going to keep this in mind to give as a gift to recent high school/colleg... moree graduates, and if any of my buds want to read it, let me know - you can definitely borrow my copy!
review 2: I helped kickstart this project!Spike and Diana Nock were familiar to me before Poorcraft, because of their great webcomics, Templar AZ and The Intrepid Girlbot, respectively. They've put together an excellent little guide to frugal living for young people in urban areas. When they pitched the idea on Kickstarter, they described how the frugal living books they found all seemed geared towards people in rural or suburban environments, where there's more space to grow food and less public transportation. Poorcraft gives advice that's applicable even if you live in a shoebox apartment.Poorcraft also has great references. For example, it refers readers to Walkscore to check out neighborhoods before moving in, and gives the contact information for major Chinatown bus companies. The educational mishaps of Mil, Penny, and Nickel are adorable as well. Cute characters illustrate life's possible dilemmas, as well as showing how to be prepared and save money.Poorcraft would make a great graduation gift. less
