review 1: Goodreads needs a half star. I give this book a 3.5. Also not really well written I found it an interesting book. I was shocked by Ramon's attacks but what distressed me even more was that an adoptive family could treat this poor, damaged child the way they did and spent her trust fund on the way. It wasn't 1960, it was '90! And trust a priest to send her to a camp for difficult teenagers were she is humiliated, starved and mistreated after she had just spent a week in a psychiatric ward for depression and suicidal thoughts. Didn't anyone feel a duty of care for this girl. Everybody is talking about the evil dad, nobody is making the adoptive parents accountable for their part. In my opinion they are even more evil that Ramon.
review 2: I skimmed the book unti... morel about the second half, because I was mainly interested in the author's life after her father murdered her family. While Carmina seemed to have a hard time understanding how her grandfather could choose to not raise her, when she later lived with him she wrote that their lifestyles clashed. I believe she probably would have been unhappy with him, as she was with the Swindells. Of course, it was sad that the Swindells didn't really show love to her. She seems to have gone from one bad situation to the next (as a minor, not her fault at all) and yet she seems to want to not be bitter. I wish her the best. less
