review 1: Soccer Hour by Carol Nevius is narrated by a group of children to depict their experience during a soccer practice in preparation for Saturday’s game. I think that this sort of group writing makes the transfer of why one may practice easier. In Johnston’s Choice Words, we learn that flexibility is the ability to take a concept learned and generalize it in a setting different from where it was learned. By its very nature, this story demonstrates one kind of transference of knowledge and the idea of what one can learn through practice. I think that the narration as well as the story itself welcomes the use of this story in the understanding of moving one piece of knowledge from one place or person to another. As a teacher of writing, or really any subject, this text coul... mored help a student to open their mind to questions like what if?; or, what’s that like?
review 2: Illustrated by Bill Thomson, how could you not want to check it out? The rhymes seemed forced to fit the rhythm and didn't follow a pattern, so sometimes less important words were omitted in order to keep the rhythm. Really applies to Naperville as practices and Saturday games are big for soccer here. Also told what would happen in a practice, but I was too distracted by the pictures to follow along. Thomson does a fantastic job again - 5 stars to him - and I love how he does a lot of sepia/black and white for the players and then color for the little parts to stick out, like the soccer balls and jerseys. less
