review 1: A Train in Winter is painful to read. And yet I am very glad that I did.The courage and determination of the women of the French Underground during their time in the concentration camps is beyond inspiring. The book is fascinating as it depicts the nature of relationships between women that helped the 'survivors' make it through their horrific experiences. There is not one hero here - the women's ability to cope, to make it through one day after another - is based on the love and comfort and support (and protection) these women gave to each other.A Train in Winter is brutally honest about the atrocities these women endured. The women hold nothing back, nor should they. Their goal is to ensure that the world doesn't forget what happened to them and so many others. I sincer... moreely hope their stories stay with us for generations to come.
review 2: A very tough book to read and even begin to try and absorb. I kept expressing my feelings aloud as I read and I had to put the book down every now and then to just stop the flood of pictures the author provided. I was so appreciative of the last chapter---an end that was no end at all, just a continuing background nightmare for anyone who survived. And of course, the horror of the fact that no only did no one really want to listen but that there were skeptics....as in the trial...'how can you look so healthy one year later if what you describe is true?" About midway I almost didn't want to continue reading but I felt that I had to. Man's inhumanity to man. less
