review 1: (Review thanks to a free digital ARC from NetGalley)Zoey is a fireball. She does not let others put her down and always defends herself and the people who she cares about the most. Kellen is Mr. Nice Guy. He tries to be nice to everyone he meets and it is hard for him to show anger towards others. Zoey and Kellen's lives become more intertwined when their friend, Maya, needs a place to stay after leaving an abusive husband. Zoey feels the need to protect her best friend and Kellen feels the need to help Maya out because his brother was the one who abused her. Zoey hates Kellen because he is related to the man who hit her best friend. Kellen is not going to let Zoey put him down and something more can grow from their little interactions. I have been going through a little r... moreeading slump right now and this felt like a breath of fresh air. The books I've been reading recently have been pretty terrible so it was nice to read something that was genuinely entertaining for once.I enjoyed reading about the characters. Zoey definitely had a personality. At times, I did feel she was going a little bit overboard but I tried to understand her at the best of my ability. Kellen, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of Zoey. It was nice to see how their personalities worked well with each other and how their relationship finally developed. They both grow as people and it was something nice to see happen. Speaking of Zoey, there is just something about her and her relationship with Kellen that it would have been addressed somehow. Early on in the novel, Zoey admits that she has had a crush on Kellen for quite some time. Once they start a relationship, that is never addressed again. It would have been nice to see how that aspect would have developed along with the plot. Other than that, it is a book that I enjoyed reading. Don't let the title put you off. It is a love story that is well written and the pace of it is very nice. The only problem I had was mentioned above. Another issue that I found is how quickly their relationship develops. But then again, they've known each other since they were young, so I'll just let that slide. Also, I am glad to see that is part of a series. I looked up the sypnosis for the other novels and it seems to focus on Zoey's best friends, Maya and Addy. I am excited for this and look forward to read them once they are published.
review 2: *Copy received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*I think this gets 3.5 stars from me. The story didn't really go much of anywhere for me to really score it much higher than that. There were a few really exciting scenes that got me wanting to read on, but a lot of it also fell flat. I loved Kellen. He's not only just the nice guy that everyone has him pegged as, he's also super sweet, a really great family man, smart & talented. I have no idea why he put up with Zoey or why he wanted to try and put up with her. She was so over the top for me that reading about her was like beating my head against the wall. She just hated Kellen by association and was so mean to him at the beginning. She was so quick to snap at everyone who loves her but would go out of her way to try and please the one person who didn't. She's a hot mess of a character. I think toward the end, she was trying and getting a little bit better, but I just didn't connect with her enough to love the book. I think the way that Maya and the kids were taken in was amazing and the way that Zoey fiercely defended them was a great part to the story. I'm not sure if I would read more about Kellen and Zoey. They just didn't draw me in enough as characters. less
