review 1: I was offered this book free in exchange for a review. The premise is interesting; the heroine, Kristin, goes into Vietnam searching for the perfect story as a memorial for her famous journalist father. In the process, she meets Luke, a man carrying a few mysteries--and demons. Their relationship starts rocky, but melds into one that supports and heals both of them.West is good at details and character development. I liked her supporting characters, especially Jonno, and felt that the romance between Luke and Kristin had potential. She mixes in an intriguing twist in the plot by creating mystery about Luke. She also shows the emotional impact of war in heart-rending detail. However, I wasn't able to really get into the story and didn't finish the book. The political opinion... mores expressed don't match mine, so mostly this is my fault! :) I lost interest about 30% of the way through and stuck it out until about 58% through and gave up.West certainly has potential, but this book isn't my favorite.
review 2: I was asked to review this book during it's re-release and I was immediately drawn into the story. Kristin and Luke are characters you will cheer for, cry and laugh with.I love historical novels and you can tell that Cathy did her research. The book is impeccably written, leaving you to think about the characters, and the story long after you turn the last page.Cathy's tag line is Stories that resonate and this book definitely resonates!Highly recommended! less
