review 1: I was drawn to these books because they were set in Hawaii. I was not disappointed with the inclusion of the culture, the people and their language. I felt like I was in Hawaii. Very well written in this regard. Pele has appointed one main family as guardians of her lands. Daniel is a descendent of that family, as is his brother in the first book, Walking in Fire. They both possess special powers from Pele to protect and keep Hawaii pristine from outside troubles, such as the drug smugglers encountered in both books. In the meantime, they find themselves falling in love with blondes who venture to the island, an unthinkable distraction to these men who have superpower jobs to do. I loved the theme of these books until I finished the second book. The brother in the first bo... moreok, Malu, is in charge of 'earth' powers and falls in love with a blonde, who ends up making a sacrifice to Pele to save Malu's life from bad guys before they can live happily ever after. "Hey, wait a second...that sounds familiar!" The problem? This is the same storyline used in Rolling in the Deep with brother, Daniel. Right down to the blondes, who are both feisty. (Being blonde 'shark bait' myself, it was nice to see blondes prevail, though it only seemed to be because they were different looking from traditional Hawaiians.) The only difference in these two books is that Daniel has 'water' powers. Both books even have a continuation of the same bad guys. I get a feeling there will be more stories from this series due to the way several other characters were presented. I hope so. However, Ms. Cade, it would be best if you could somehow vary your storyline. I hope book 3 will sound quite different, while continuing the sizzling love stories. Otherwise, I'll be feeling forced to read the same story for a third time in a row.
review 2: The Ho’omalu family is one of the oldest families of the Hawaiian Islands. They are the chosen of Pele Hawaii’s Guardian. To this end she has given them gifts to help them carry out their duties.Melia’s friends Claire, Grace and Bella have come to Hawaii for her wedding to Malu. Malu’s big brother Daniel is tasked to pick them up at the airport and another Ho’omalu is struck by lightning. At least that’s what Daniel is wishing for. He does NOT want to be attracted to Claire. He has his reasons not the least of which is that he is a Ho’omalu although his affinity is for the water not fire like his brother. In this book the Ho’omalu family is still trying to shut down the drug runners that are bringing in their kind of poison to the islands. I loved watching big, bad, tattooed Daniel fall bit by bit. less
