review 1: The book is written well with the exception that it ends too quickly. It's almost as if the hiking stopped so should the book. That being said, I didn't like this book. Yes, it's honest and you learn a lot about the author's mental growth. I just didn't like it. The first several chapters are very depressing. And talk about not planning for the trip! I wondered if she was trying to write a comedy because of the lack of planning and experiences.
review 2: While I enjoyed the travelogue aspect of Wild, it was difficult not to roll your eyes at the shear stupidity of Cheryl's adventure. She was not a hiker, had not practiced hiking with her Monster backpack, had not broken in her shoes, and oh yes, did a hit of heroin 48 hours before she began her trek on the Pac
... moreific Coast Trail. It was also tough not to pass judgment on her self professed hippie lifestyle and focus only on the story of her hike. We learn that Cheryl's mother died four years prior to her hike, she dumped her caring husband, hooked up with a heroin addict and spends much of the book whining about how unfair life is. And oh yes, she likes sex, and likes to remind the reader how much she likes sex. All of my complaints aside, Wild was still a compelling book for the shear adventure of the PCT...if you can get past the author's self obsession. less

Better than I thought it would be - She didn't see much wildlife and this was a disappointment
