review 1: In this book, Chris Tomlinson brings to light the fact that his ancestors were slave-owners in Texas. It is a family history but not just of his family but also of the families of the slaves his ancestors owned (which includes football great LaDainian Tomlinson). It is an honest family history that does not try to whitewash the sins of his ancestors. It is also brutally honest about what life was like for a slave in Texas before the Civil War and what it was like for them after they were freed. I found this book both interesting and disturbing.

Insightful and relevant to today. It's long with lots of details, but worth sticking it out.
