review 1: I have very mixed feelings on this book! I think it is proof that you shouldn't mess with a good thing! The Good: the plot of this story was great. I was very interested in finding out what happened. I liked the whole backstory and character of Bathory. It never felt slow or tough to get through, I struggled a bit to finish 'Dracula' but sped right through this. Sad ending, very dark and tragic but a good piece of entertainment. This story was told from the third person which made it easier to read than the original since you didn't have to keep up with who was speaking. The Bad: I was confused about the relationship between Dracula and Bathory, at one point they were cousins then later she was referred to as one of his early brides. The gore and sexual sadism actually took ... moreaway from the story for me. I think there were better ways to express to the reader how evil Bathory was. Some of it was a bit much (I.e. The assault on Mina.) Bram Stoker created a terrifying villain using brief descriptions through the eyes of his characters whereas Dacre depended on the gore and sex factor alone which, in my opinion, cheapened it! Also, Stoker changed some of the events that occurred in 'Dracula' to better fit his plot line (the dates, and Dracula's relationship to Mina) which I didn't like. The Bottom Line: You don't mess with a classic! If this story had been about different characters with the same plot line it would have been great! But the defamation of the characters from the original novel as an attempt to portray their lives 'after' really just hurt a literature lover's heart. If Bram Stoker's novel means anything at all to you, do NOT read this 'sequel'P.S. Don't even get me started on how Dacre exploited his family name to get this book published and publicized!!
review 2: In a genre that didn't get a lot of respect over a century ago and still doesn't get a whole lot of respect today, Bram Stoker managed to breach the surface of both literature and popular fiction with his famed work of horror, Dracula. 112 years later Dacre Stoker, the great grandnephew of Bram Stoker himself, took this work in his hands and proceeded to mercilessly rape it with a golden, glitter-encrusted penis. Dracula the Un-Dead is the sad result of this grievous coupling. It takes place 25 years after the original work. The characters have all oddly transformed into tedious one-dimensional nitwits and many of them have completely altered personalities, except for the one aspect that they were notable for which have come to dominate their existences. The new villain was tired a decade ago (Elizabeth Bathory as a vampire, surprise!) and the old villain (Dracula) is now positively radiant with the blinding intensity of a million sparkles, and he's a good fuck too so he'd fit in with the modern vampire crowd. Who doesn't love vampire fangs puncturing a lady's neck symbolizing coital penetration, I mean really. The time period is well-researched. By 'well-researched' I mean the authors seem to have read a 1-page summary of all the famous people of the late 1800's and then included as many of them as possible in the beginning of the book. I suppose it is fitting, however, considering the way he is using his ancestor's work to make a quick buck and all.If Dacre's goal was to desecrate everything his ancestor created he did a wonderful job of it. Not only are there no redeeming qualities about this book, but it completely mars my memory of the original. If I could unremember reading this atrocious thing I would, but I can't, and you won't be able to either. Read at your own peril, I'm warning you.I will say that the last chapter is very clever and well-done. It's like the most incredible diamond you've ever seen, embedded in the smelliest turd you've ever smelled. less

It was a good "sequel" of Dracula, although they aren't written by the same person!

Some interesting ideas but totally predictable -- hampered by tacky writing.

Not my kind of book. Wonder why I bought it in the first place.
