review 1: I almost gave up on this book, but I'm glad I didn't. The ending definitely has me on board for no. 2.I have a few issues with the book, but I don't know if they're due to the writing or the audio book narration, and the more I think about it the more I think it's the latter. The audio book narrator makes everything sound like THE MOST DRAMATIC THING EVER and the lack of variety gets old. Real quick. Also, the screaming, rasping, chaotic voice he uses for Ecko is really grating. All that said, Ware does some great things with the written narrative that makes you question the reality of the fantasy world Ecko finds himself in. They're subtle too -- like giving you tons of POV characters (maybe too many?) from the fantasy world -- that give you the sense the other char... moreacters are living, breathing things, not a bunch of NPCs set in place solely for the main character's benefit.
review 2: I'm not rating this - as I didn't finish it, I don't think it's fair to do so - but I'd thought I could review it.Despite its presentation as a science fiction novel, Ecko Rising spends most of its time in the fantasy realm. The SF world is the standard dark-as-cliche cyberpunk dystopia - the sort of world written by an author who takes their influence more from film than literature. The fantasy world is so tired, it's where I started to lose the will to read. The writing is, I don't think it's going too far to say, problematic. I don't mind profanity, but this is too much. Everyone swears. At each other, at themselves. There's fucks all through the dialogue, and then all through the description. It's like a teenager trying very hard to impress. It doesn't impress; it's needy and posturing, and immature writing. The characters are all hard as nails, in that now-wearying Warren Ellis style - all snarky put-downs and constant threats. It's often used in place of rational and careful characterisation, and this is no exception. The main character - Ecko - seems to be a supposedly scary and intimidating cross between Spider-Man and Batman, though when we first see him in action he makes a poor show of climbing a wall and gets himself almost killed by a simple flying drone. We're told he's formidable, but when we're shown, he's rubbish. He does swear a lot though. So, no, I didn't finish this. I put it down just after the centaurs turned up and a captured female character gave herself to the grimy villain because of reasons, and then did everything he asked of her because she burned for his touch. less
