review 1: I truly enjoyed reading about this inside account of one family's experience through Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath. The book really gives a lot of insight about the chaos that happened after the storm and how people behave in the midst of chaos. However hearing about the family's situation since the book was written really diminished the effect of the book for me. A huge shadow was cast over the main character's heroic status that was portrayed the whole book.
review 2: I loved this book. Eggers clearly did his homework with this one, and chose a story that was sometimes entertaining, sometimes funny, often heartbreaking, and extremely upsetting. Having only second hand, pretty stilted information on how Katrina effected the people of Louisiana, it was s
... moreo intriguing to follow the Zeitoun family. Eggers clearly captured the beauty, flaws and the characters of each person he interviewed. This book was just so amazing for many reasons, but, mostly, it was just a great choice for Eggers to pick this specific family, and their very difficult story. When a story enrages me, makes me laugh, cry and question all that I know, it's worth reading. The layers that arise in this book are so complex and interesting that no review I could give will be as good as you picking up the book and being unable to put it down. So do that. Now. less
