review 1: After reading so many rave reviews of this book, I frankly expected... well, more. If you are teaching the Bible without much training and have read virtually no other books on preaching, then yes, this one would be quite helpful. But a word of warning: If you've read Lloyd-Jones or Chapell or MacArthur or Spurgeon, this will feel rather simplistic. The author does a good job of explaining the basic approach we need to take in exegeting, understanding, applying and teaching God's word, and offers some examples of pitfalls to avoid. My biggest disappointment is that there just isn't enough space to go into any details about HOW to execute these steps. I would definitely give this book to someone who is just getting started; it's very clear, accessible, and probably an ... moreexcellent tool for the beginner.
review 2: Expository preaching is governed by the text of the Bible, including its language, meaning, and intent. It isn’t enough to simply refer to Scripture in a sermon, Scripture must control the content and application of any message. Helm explains the laborious yet necessary process by which sermons are written from Scripture. In doing so, he has created one of the best resources on expository preaching, full of help for novice and veteran preachers alike. Highly recommended. less
