review 1: Not great literature, but offers an intriguing and rather disturbing window into life in the Satmar Hasidic community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While some have questioned the authenticity of certain factual events, I did not feel that the overriding picture of life in this community would be altered much, regardless. For me, the book's biggest weakness was her inability to move out of the "me vs everyone else = all good vs all bad" perspective. As she matures and further develops her voice, those boundaries may loosen up a bit, providing better insight and perspective.
review 2: I found this to be an interesting and quick read. I began this book with zero knowledge of Hasidic Judaism, and was greatly intrigued and shocked to learn of their strict practices. It
... more is always interesting to learn of unknown practices, and Deborah's was certainly an experience that draws the reader in. I think that her story is one of strength and I love that she persisted in finding the life that she yearned for. I do wish that the book had included a bit more about her experiences after leaving the sect, as I felt her story ended rather abruptly considering the reader is invested in reading of her life up until then, but it was an interesting read nonetheless. less

Fascinating and fast-paced. Funny and sickening. Would recommend.
