review 1: I started this book last night. I'm halfway through. Diana, the author, was my professor for Spring semester in the Creative Writing MFA program at MSU-Mankato. I have only one more semester to finish and no classes with Diana. That means I can speak freely. The first chapter is about her father. I cried on the last page of it. Other chapters, about her son and the puppy who humped a stuffed dinosaur, have made me laugh out loud. At work. On an overnight shift where there's nothing to laugh about. I'll finish this book on tonight's late shift.
review 2: I empathized with so much of this book, and as someone who's about to have a son, I felt I got a lot of insight out of it--not your crappy parenting book insight, but flawed-and-loving-and-neurotic mother insight
... more, which is worth so much more. (Also, I love Joseph's tendency to string long series of words with hyphens, a quirk I share.) Though I meant to sit down to read a few pages, I ended up nearly reading the whole book in one sitting, only stopping when my schedule demanded it, and finished it as soon as I could the next day. It isn't the story of some major event that will probably ever demand the wider public's attention, but it's funny and heartfelt without any of the cheese factor I often associate with memoir. less

The beginning felt a little klunky, but I laughed and cried and by the end Diana had charmed me.

I just couldn't get into this book. Gave it about 50 pages, and decided to move on.
Sum
Surprisingly good.
