review 1: I read this for research on a new book I'm writing and found myself liking her writing and insights quite a bit. I would have given it a higher rating except I didn't like the structure, some chapters read as complete mini-essays, and others read as part of larger narrative. So I got confused sometimes where I was in her time period. I LOVED how she gently disses her life in "house and decorating porn" and I would have liked to know more about how she survived money-wise. Touching, elegant, medium insightful.
review 2: Browning's book has been on my "to be read" list for awhile but I just now got around to reading it. (no snickers, please) Several folks and bloggers recommended it (inclu. Head Butler) so when I finished dusting it off as part of my latest round... more of spring cleaning (the spring cleaning leftover from 2012...) I decided I'd better hop to it.It's an enjoyable narrative, sad in places, hilarious in places and provocative in places. Memoirs may be intimate by definition or deceptive but I don't get that feeling from Browning's words. There are some phrases here worth using the yellow highlighter on and when she writes about gardening and putting one's hands into the earth, there is poetry. Read this book in a comfortable chair with a cup of coffee or tea nearby.SWp/s: my favorite chapter was the last one, not because I was glad that the book was over but because of the beauty of language used to describe the natural world and the one inside: "The edge of the sea has many voices...but the voice I respond most deeply to, listen most closely to, is one that whispers..." less
