review 1: This was a FANTASTIC book! Not adventurous or exciting, but an extremely well written, quiet and gorgeous book. I know nothing about living on a farm or living on large amount of land. I do know about ice up north and the enjoyment of skating on ponds and such during the winter. However, I never had experiences like they had in this book. I hate the cold weather, but I would have loved to live the experiences in this book! I don't know how much kids will like it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
review 2: The author reminisces about growing up in rural Maine and how the onset of ice in the winter delighted her brothers and sisters and neighbors because it heralded the start of a new season of skating. She goes on to enumerate and name how different kinds of ice led
... more them through the winter, climaxing with the construction of a backyard ice rink and skating parties. McClintock’s deft and graceful pen and ink illustrations are a perfect match for Obed’s clear and sparkling prose of her childhood memories. less
