review 1: Both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Learning more about Ryan White, who I only vaguely remember from my childhood almost brought me to tears - and learning the impact he had on John getting his life together in the wake of addiction was inspiring. Stories of struggle, like White's, are interspersed with stories of advances - though often the advances don't make as much of an impact as one would think. I really did learn a lot about HIV/AIDS and the current state of research in reading this, which was also nice. It's fascinating to think that even without an official cure, AIDS could be "cured" through education and drug distribution. The only criticism I have is that in John's passion for the subject, the narrative started to feel repetitive in pla... moreces.
review 2: Not to be confused with a comprehensive autobiography of a famous man, this book details Elton John's mission to alieviate the suffering, both stigmatism and physical, of individuals with AIDs. He is a celebrity, who came to the cause involved with drugs that he carried over from the 70s. He meets a young, early AIDs patient, Ryan White, and is propelled to take on the mantle of responsibility that someone in the world's limelight can do. We hear, then, of Elton John's self development as an advocate, we see his fellow celebs such as Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, Lady Di, all the way up to Bill Clinton, who endorses him on the cover of the book, all of whom join him in his cause. Full of facts and updates, presented in a very easy casual conversational style, I left this book feeling like my friend had just bared his soul. Elton and his Elton John's Aids Foundation, are addressing this problem until eradication. The best solution, no matter what your country's economic contribution to it may be, is to love the individual who has this problem. less
