review 1: This book surprised me. I was skeptical about a memoir of depression, obsession and attempted suicide but one of my students thought I would appreciate the connections to Hamlet (and Ophelia specifically). After a slow start, I found myself engrossed in the life and emotions of the bright and creative Emma Forrest. The voices of her lost "rock" and then a soulmate/lover remain with readers long after turning the last page.
review 2: Your Voice in My Head is a memoir of Forrest’s battle with bipolar disorder and how she was saved by her psychiatrist, Dr. R. It also serves as a tribute to her beloved therapist after he passes away unexpectedly from an illness he hid from his patients. It provides a glimpse into her struggles with self-harm as well as her relati
... moreonships and breakups, the most notable being with Colin Farrell (referred to in the book as “Gypsy Husband”).Although she doesn’t realize it for some time, Forrest is trained from years with Dr. R to handle the devastating losses of these two men. She has come a long way from the twelve year old girl who’d visit the Tate museum to view a painting of Ophelia and identify with her madness. Now she looks at the same painting and imagines the drowning girl swimming to shore to reclaim her life.A lot of the publicity for the book seems to focus on Colin Farrell, and indeed, a lot of chapters contain mention of him and the effects the relationship had on her because he really was her one true love. But to say he is the focus would not be accurate. At the end of many chapters Forrest includes letters written by Dr. R’s patients in his online obituary; even when he is not directly mentioned, his presence always permeates through the book, just like the voice in her head. less
