review 1: Before I started to read this book, I got the feeling that he probably has an uncommon life or extraordinary experiences in the past. Despite of that feeling, I never expect that it was more than that after reading the story. I do believe that uncommon experiences is one of the reasons that leads him to become a well-known bestselling author. The entire biography wasn't that bad as what others had reviewed here. I checked some of those reviews before I started to read the book and I have doubts whether I should proceed to read it.However, when it comes to the middle part of the biography, I started to believe some of the negative reviews about this book. I felt bored and wished to skip the story which relates to black magic. It was written in a dull and confused way but I ... morewas able to finished the book without skipping any of the chapters. Despite my dislike about the story of black magic in the book, I feel the entire biography is interesting and I enjoyed reading it. Maybe I just like the beginning and the ending of the book especially the letter to the author of this biography. Although Paulo experienced many different lives and probably some of the things that he did in the past may be unethical or immoral for me, this doesn't stop me to continue reading his novels. Everyone has a past. It doesn't bother me at all. His novels should not be judged by his past.I feel the biography can inspire us to become someone that will never give up in chasing our dreams despite the difficulties that we will face during the process. Although his success was not fully recognised in his own country but his novels usually appear in the bestselling list around the world. It's heartache when being likened almost everywhere in the world except your own country and the reason is always something indescribable.
review 2: Journalist Morais indulges the reader in pointillistic detail in this biography of Coelho. Often regarded as a modern day prophet, Coelho's life bears resemblance to the typical hero myth, albeit set in the hippy milieu of the 1960s. He was born dead and was revived under miraculous circumstances. He demonstrated remarkable talent in his youth, suffered modern trials in the form of psychiatric hospitalizations, encountered helpers that provided him with tools (theater, drugs, witchcraft) for his journey, and finally realized his destiny. Morais refrains from glorifying Coelho and even interprets his subject's neurotic superstitious behavior as obsessive compulsive disorder, though it is likely that many of Coelho's readers will share his magical-religious way of perceiving the world. The development of Coelho's familiar body of work isn't addressed until the final quarter, where we learn, for example, that was originally written as a theatrical script. While his most devoted fans will have read in other sources about Coelho's forays into rather emblematic sixties pursuits: Satanism and witchcraft, polyamory, and drugs, Morais successfully fleshes out Coelho as a personality for his disciples and detractors alike. This will undoubtedly be a popular book in the libraries and bookstores where Coelho's work is appreciated less

Writer Morais did a great job on this biography!I didn't read most of Coelho's books and didn't know anything about him beside the fact he sold a lot of books that you could buy with daily papers. I've learnd that Coelho's life is nothing I would have imaginated to be and was really shocked to find out certain facts about him.I reccomend it to people who love reading biographys of famous writers.
