review 1: This is an exceptional book. If you want to read something relating to the courage and stamina of an individual, this book will do it for you. It is about a young girl who was battered by an alcoholic father but who, through her shear will power and faith, managed to overcome the worse conditions I have ever read of concerning a child in the U.S.I am not a religious person but without faith I don't think this child/woman could have made it through life. It is the story of her search for her family, her long hard road in life and her amazing come back. There are things that will horrify you in this dark tale of despair and this child's travel through the "shadow of death." This is one person I can really admire and respect. She lived through an unheard of childhood to m... moreanage to bounce back and still retain her love for her family and her God.A sad, sad story but one that will grip your soul in spite of the grim happenings.
review 2: Loved this book. Well written memoir by Frances Grubb. How she survived her childhood and learned to live and forgive is unbelievable. Everyone who thinks they had a rough childhood because they were denied the brands of clothes other kids wore, or had to wear hand me downs should read this book. Those who think they were mistreated because they had to work for what they wanted should read this book. And those who think they were abused because they were spanked when they misbehaved should read this book. It will reshape their thinking, for sure. less

Interesting dysfunctional family, but a bit more "preachy" than I cared for.
