review 1: This is the beautifully written story of an unlikely friendship and the consequences of that friendship, told through letters, journal entries and news articles. Em, who lives in a floating community on the Gulf of Mexico, and Kaya, a political prisoner living in a prison suspended over a volcano, are complex, fully-realized characters trying to make sense of their place in their communities and their communities' places in the larger societies they are both part of and outside of. The author shows a keenly felt sympathy for those marginalized by a biased majority. She touches subtly, but resonantly, on issues of race, politics, religion, and social and economic prejudices. In a perfect world, Studio Ghibli would snatch up the rights to this and Hayao Miyazaki would come o... moreut of retirement to make this his final film.
review 2: Pen Pal..By Francesca Forrest...I won this book through Goodreads. .A young girl living on the sea, wanted a pen pal. Her only option was find a bottle and put a message inside, which she did. She got a much anticipated letter a month later from Kaya a political prisioner in her country, high above the Ruby lake. She was accused of an illegal demonistration. Em's and Kaya's letter was a comfort and encouragement to each other. Kay is true to her convictions. The author did a great job separating the chapters and a good format. less
