review 1: The head of my social work internship (at an addiction clinic) recommended this book to me. Wow. It is super-disturbing. Very compelling, very readable... The story of how a boy found family and stability in the white power movement, went to prison for hate crimes, lost everything when he eventually woke up to the fact that he didn't believe the dogma anymore, and lost more through addiction. I'm pretty sure she wanted me to read it more for the bits on addiction than the bits on hate crimes. The most disturbing part is that when he was embedded in the white power movement and committing hate crimes on a regular basis, his life seemed much more "together" than when he was an addict.
review 2: I heard Frank Meeink interviewed on NPR one night while driving
... more home from work. The interviewer's words "skinhead" and Meeink's belligerent statement, "I was workin' for this Jew...(will not write anymore)..." This interview caught me off-guard & I drove extra slow (difficult for me) to hear the whole segment. Complete chills down my spine but, I learned a lot and even more so when I bought the book. I'll admit I haven't finished it yet because it's a very tough read. I shall resume after a few more reads that don't make me shake--literally. It gets better--Meeink's worldview and life--but I found and find it unbelievable that such cruel, racist, hateful, sadistic and ignorant souls truly exist. Meeink has been to hell and back and somehow turned his life into something productive. He now works with the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) which is unbelievable. I connected with him briefly on twitter...he said he's working with the ADL making presentations and trying to stay sober. less
