review 1: It was fascinating to read the story of Gail Simmons' life as she experienced cooking school, writing, working with great chefs and food connoisseurs, then progressing to Top Chef and Top Chef Just Desserts. It was especially interesting to read about her childhood in Canada, and her challenges getting work visas in the United States. She also included some cooking advice and recipes that were helpful.
review 2: I didn't really know anything about Gail Simmons other than her appearances on Top Chef as a judge and that she worked, in some capacity, for Food & Wine magazine. ... moret a food writer judging food without cooking experience - a foodie snob, basically, which turned out to be a completely erroneous assumption. Her memoir is interesting, humble and, I think, written largely by her, although she does thank a ghost writer in her acknowledgements. I find food writing beautiful in general - you can't read words like "persimmons," "poppy-seed lavender ice cream" and "lemons wrapped in cheesecloth" without pursing your lips a little - and she weaves it nicely with the narrative of her life. I enjoyed it. less

another biography, interesting life it may be, but that does not a writer make.

It was fun and frothy. Nothing too deep.
