review 1: A fun, breezy summary of cognitive science research related to music. I'd recommend it for anyone over 20 who plays an instrument, is trying, or would like to try. The most useful ideas for me underscored other research currently in vogue about the importance of persistence, grit, and deliberate practice in getting better at anything. Three stars here means it was good and I liked it--nothing to ding, but nothing earth-shattering either.

Some of the studies about the impact of music on the brain were very interesting to learn about. Hearing the first hand narratives of musicians talking about their craft was also intriguing. However, I grew a little weary of the author's narrative about halfway through the book, and sort of wishing things would wrap up. This is definitely not a quick read. less
