review 1: A gossipy, light read. He definitely seems to not see his place in this situation very clearly since he details every time someone said something to hurt his delicate feelings, but excuses his own culpability by merely stating that he said some things he shouldn't have said or that things got heated. Also, I get completely that it had to have been intimidating working with Julie Taymor, Bono and Edge, but he tries to come off like Cassandra always clearly prophesying doom to a group that willfully ignores his sage advice. Instead, he seems simply out of his league. Finally, the colloquial "If you don't have something nice to say, come sit next to me" tone was grating, as if he spoke the text into a tape recorder and transcribed it later with LOTS of ita... morelics.
review 2: I still haven't been to see the Spider-Man musical, but now I want to see it more than ever. As both a comic book and music geek, I remember hearing things about it, but this book delivers more of the story than I ever thought I would know. Do you remember books that came with records attached to them? Sometimes full LPs and sometimes just a 45? I really wished this book came with a full soundtrack that included songs that got cut. I've only heard whatever made the official soundtrack release, and I liked it. Now I want more!I don't think you need to be a comic geek to like this book. You just need to be someone who wants to hear the story of how a show gets on Broadway. A drama-filled, excruciating story. And maybe someone who wants to hear the inner struggles of artists and writers doing and re-doing and bearing more criticism than praise. less
