review 1: This book was recommended to me by a relative as a cute read for my own vacation in Ireland. The premise of the story is cute, but it read more like a Lifetime movie than a good piece of literature. The plot had a lot of holes, and the actions that take place throughout the novel happen way too fast to pass as even remotely realistic. I felt like the author had a lot of directions she wanted to take with this book - but sometimes less is more. Quick, easy, predictable read - just okay.
review 2: I should have followed my instinct about this book when I read, near the beginning of Chapter Two ". . . the sort of eyes that revealed every emotion, by turns pensive and filled with mirth." Yikes. Not only were many of her descriptions trite, but Ms. Barbieri's char... moreacters were two dimensional and her plot far too predictable to be interesting. There's a budding romance that hits some speed bumps, economic strife, a villain, a difficult character, and a tragedy or two. The crux of the book comes just where you'd expect it: about 85% through. Within the final chapters, all problems are far too tidily resolved, almost as if the author was in a rush to complete her work.Will I ever overcome my compulsion to finish every book I start? There are so many good books out there and so little time to read. Ms. Barbieri may be an excellent short story writer, and she has good taste in Irish authors, but this lightweight novel is not even close to being in the same league as Edna O'Brien. less
