review 1: Not a book I would select for myself. If it hadn't been for my Library book club I would never have selected this book to read. I was dreading to read it, but once I got into it, I was reminiscent of my own Grandma and Granny. The awkwardness of trying to carry on a conversation with such a large age gap. Both my Grandma's lived to be in their 90's. It was a good book to make you think about what life was like when they were growing up.
review 2: 3 1/2 stars for this one. I would have gone to 4 if it had started as well as it finished. By the time I was done reading I was thoroughly charmed, but the first half of the book dragged a bit. When I think about that, I think that it mirrors the story itself. But as the days went on it became obvious that Grandma was a lot more interesting than he had originally thought, and as his interest grew, so did ours. A tender, lovely memoir that I think would be enhanced by a live reading to bring out the author's wry humour. less
